No concrete mixers.
No welders.
Not even scaffolding.
Our technologies have been meticulously designed to be efficient, strong and sustainable, but beyond what is visible, our company has been working tirelessly to truly create environmentally sustainable buildings. We pride ourselves on working with local manufacturers to reduce emissions associated with freight and transport. Our materials provide natural insulation to improve the energy efficiency of our buildings.
At NXT, we do things a little differently. When we set out to better the inefficiencies of the construction sector, it was driven by a genuine passion to create positive change. We wanted to be able to, hand on heart, know that the way we assembled buildings was environmentally sustainable.
It’s very easy to tell people you are environmentally sustainable. But it is much, much harder to prove it.
And while we could continue to tell you how we’re building differently to preserve the planet, we thought it’d be better to show you. That’s why we decided to quantify just how little impact one of our projects has on the environment, and that’s why the Wyndham LUX Perth Hotel has become the first hotel worldwide, and the only built structure in the southern hemisphere, to achieve an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
We were privileged enough to welcome Senator for Western Australia, the Hon Linda Reynolds, to our Research & Development Facility to officially announce this achievement.
What is an EPD?
An EPD is an independently verified document that reports environmental information about the entire life cycle of a product, in this case, the Wyndham LUX Perth Hotel building. Producing an EPD is an internationally recognised way for companies like ours to be transparent about the environmental sustainability of producing and maintaining products. To
deliver the hotel’s EPD, we assessed its life cycle using scientific methods, conducted according to strict international standards.
How do you achieve an EPD?
It takes a lot of rigorous data analysis to achieve an EPD! Many companies in all sorts of industries conduct life cycle assessments on their products, but an EPD verification requires an immense amount of data to be collected and reported according to strict international rules and standards. It’s a complex process, looking at the entire life cycle of a product. As you can imagine, this is quite complicated for a large hotel. We had to look at the environmental impact of not just building the hotel, but the operational efficiency of the hotel (down to the millimeter of how much water would be used to clean floors!) and the disassembly and recyclability of the hotel down the track.
Why did we think it was important to obtain an EPD?
For us, the most logical way to be transparent about the impact of our products internationally was to produce an EPD. In the current age of construction, there’s a lot of trust involved. Companies are asking their clients, project owners and the public to trust their word that their projects are environmentally sound. But there isn’t always quantified information to back up those claims, and we at NXT take such claims seriously. We wanted to be able to show, with scientific evidence, the environmental impact of our projects. We’re committed to creating environmentally sustainable buildings, and now we know exactly how we can improve our practices even further. We can communicate with conviction when we say our products have minimal environmental impact, and anyone using NXT™ Technologies have the ability to achieve their own environmental targets. It means future projects are exponentially more sustainable.
